Irwin has specialized in estate, income and gift tax planning for more than thirty-five years. Irwin has also been actively engaged in the field of Elder Law for more than twenty years. He is a member of the ABA, the NYS Bar Association and the Nassau County Bar Association and is a member of the tax, trust and estates, and elder law committees of the New York State Bar.
After graduating from the University of Connecticut, Irwin started his business career as an accountant. He then earned his MBA and LLB at New York University. He was a government bond trader at William E. Pollak & Co. participating in real estate sale and leasebacks, private placement of debt and preferred stock and registration statements for public offerings.
In his estate, gift and tax law practice, Irwin is an expert in living trusts, charitable trusts, life insurance trust, and personal residence trusts. Irwin has used limited liability companies, grantor retained annuity trusts and other valuation discount devices to reduce estate and gift taxes.
In the area of Elder Law, protecting the assets of the elderly from erosion to nursing home care, and protecting the parents' assets from their children's creditors, Irwin has used private annuities, family tenancy agreements and LLCs.
Irwin has supervised the formation and implementation of corporations, limited partnerships and limited liability companies and has drafted the attendant stockholder, partnership and LLC agreements. He has engaged in the buying and selling of businesses, real estate and professional practices.
Irwin Scherago is a lecturer and a writer in the areas of income, estate and gift tax planning and he has written more than 150 articles on estate planning for The Bulletin (the New York City Life Underwriters Association), Life Notes (the Nassau County Life Underwriters Association), The Journal of Taxation For Lawyers and the Journal of Taxation For Accountants.
Irwin taught Estates and Trusts in the Adelphi University paralegal program (1975 through 1978). He has lectured for: the C.W. Post Tax Institute; the Pace University Tax Institute; NYU Tax Institute; St. John's University-IRS joint tax seminars, The Foundation for Accounting Education (FAE); Empire Association of Accountants; and to securities and insurance brokerage houses.
Irwin and his wife, Marilyn Schapiro, live in Port Washington. Marilyn is a First Vice President of investments at Merrill Lynch in Garden City. Irwin's daughter, Nina Scherago Jones, is an investment manager at Trust Investments for Foundations (TIFF) and his son, Randy, is an investment analyst at Prudential Securities.
Irwin is an avid reader of political books and has lectured on the importance of retaining the Electoral College System which, according to Irwin, is the linchpin of our two party system. Irwin was the campaign fund treasurer for Congressman Lester L. Wolff (1966 to 1978) and a former Democratic committeeman and zone leader (1955 through 1980).
He is a season ticket holder of the Amazin' Mets. His jokes' pipeline extends from New York, through Nashville, San Francisco and White Plains.
